Center School demolition to start Nov. 2
Hopkinton announced that demolition of two additions to the historic Center School will begin Nov. 2, closing the property and its walking trail for about three months as the town prepares to restore the original 1928 building.
The Town of Hopkinton announced that demolition of two additions to the historic Center School is expected to begin Monday, Nov. 2, marking the first phase of a project to restore the building.
The work will remove the school's 1950 and 1980 additions to prepare the property for the next phase, restoration of the original 1928 school building.
Following a competitive bidding process, the town awarded the demolition contract to American Environmental of Holyoke. The contract is valued at approximately $1.4 million, about 30% below the budgeted amount. The town's Community Preservation Committee is administering funding for the project through the Community Preservation Act.
American Environmental will secure the site and remove hazardous materials before demolishing the two additions. The demolition work is expected to take approximately three months. Once it is complete, crews will level and stabilize the site to prepare for the next phase.
Access to the property, including the walking trail, will be closed during the project. Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and signs along Ash Street will alert residents to the work. All construction vehicles will be staged on the Center School property, and no traffic interruptions are anticipated.
